As we discussed in Phase-1 & Phase-II, Part-A of this Article series. Stress Mgmt. is an Art & Plays A Vital Role in Enterprise Agile Coaching, Agile Team Coaching & Individual Coaching. I am assuming that you already read the below Articles in this Series:

Stress Management is an Art, Do You Agree? I Agree. The Conquering Phase (PHASE-II, Part-A) – Coping with Stress – Learn – Practice – Master – Research

Let us continue our journey and move to Phase-II, Part-B i.e. Understand & Identify the Different Types of Stress. We come across plenty of challenges in every Agile Transformation Journey. Let us recollect the Agile Manifesto Value:

Individuals & Interactions Over Processes & Tools

As per the above value, We should try to focus the team’s attention on the individuals & interactions involved. This is because the projects are undertaken by people, not tools, and problems get solved by people, not process. Likewise, projects are accepted by people, the scope is debated by people, and the definition of a successfully “done” Project is negotiated by people. Focusing early on developing the individuals involved in the project and emphasizing productive and effective interactions help set up a project for success.

As an Agile Coach, Scrum Master, Servant / Adaptive Leader, it is important for you to understand & identify Different Types of Stress, Definitely A Value Add for You and the respective Organization.

You could also add more value by supporting to Improve Interpersonal Relationship Skills of the team/individual/ Single Point of Contact (SPOC) / Scrum-Master / Flow-Master / Any Other Roles suggested by the specific Agile Approach followed by Your Organization / Project

Types of Stress

There are Three Types of Stress.

  1. Conflicts
  2. Frustrations
  3. Pressures

Conflicts

Every day we face different types of conflicts. We get torn between good/right things (Which are difficult and do not yield immediate benefits) and bad/wrong things (Which are attractive and give immediate benefits). We may have too many options but we do not know which one to choose.

We may have to make a difficult choice among many unpleasant ones and we are not very sure which is the least troublesome. There may be inner conflicts between our basic needs (ID), reality (EGO) and moral and social norms (Super-Ego). There may be conflicts:

  • Between two peoples like husband and wife
  • Between Team Members
  • Between Product Owner & Scrum-Master
  • Between family members
  • Between Friends & Colleagues
  • Between Individual & Society
  • Between Customer & Team/Product-Owner/Scrum-Master etc..

Frustrations

Failures or Frustrations are common in our life. Our aspirations & our Achievements may not tally. Repeated failures in petty issues or failures on a larger scale may cause stress. We feel depressed very much when we fail to achieve something and our Friends / Relatives / Colleagues succeed in that very task. Basically, when our needs are not fulfilled, We get frustrated.

Pressures

There may be internal pressure to achieve more, earn more, scale higher on the Socio-Economic ladder. There may be a craving for recognition, name and fame, money and material benefits.

Colleagues, Superiors, Subordinates, Family members, friends, relatives and the System we live in may expect us to achieve more & more, This will naturally result in Stress.
