1. Brain & Mind:
Negative emotions like fear, anger, sadness engulf an individual’s lack of attention, concentration, poor memory, inability to take quick decisions, poor learning, inability to remain comfortable and composed are the common complaints of people under stress. Thus there is a general decline of mental (including intellectual) functioning of the individual. This naturally increases Stress.
2. Digestive System:
Dryness in the mouth, poor or no appetite, lack of taste, the fullness of stomach, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, increased flatulence, diarrhea or constipation. Thus food intake becomes irregular and not relishing.
3. Heart & Blood Circulation:
The rate and the force with which our heartbeats increase. We feel the heart pounding in the chest (Palpitation). Blood flow increases and we blush. As a result, we feel the warmth. We sweat. The blood flow to the brain decreases. We feel giddy. As a result, we may faint. Blood pressure raises.
4. Lungs & Respiratory System:
There is increased but shallow breathing. We may struggle to breathe. There may be a sensation of constriction in the chest.
5. Muscles & Joints:
There are contractions of the muscles. There may be shivering. Because of Continuous Contractions, there may be ache and pain like headache, chest pain, back pain, pain in the limbs, joint pains. These and easy fatigability are common complaints in people who are under stress.
6. Genitals & Urinary System:
There may be an increased frequency of passing urine, premature ejaculation, poor erection of the penis. Disinclination to have sex. Thus a person under stress may suffer from poor sexual drive and ability.
All these changes occur because of excess secretion of adrenaline as Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal glands become hyperactive under stress. Prolonged stress leads to increased wear and tear of the body and mind which in turn leads to –
1. Accident Proneness:
Because of poor attention, concentration, faulty perception and inappropriate decisions, the individual becomes more accident-prone. People under stress are more prone to road accidents, home or workplace accidents than people who are not under stress.
2. Mental Disorders:
Anxiety disorders (Generalized Anxiety, Panic, Phobic disorders), depression, hysteria, somatoform disorders, acute psychosis, exacerbation of the already existing mental disorders are frequently seen in people who are under stress.
3. Alcohol and other substance abuse:
It is a common experience of many people that when they are under tension they smoke or drink more than usual. They run a high risk of abusing these substances and eventually become dependent on them for relief.
4. Physical Disorders:
Compared to others, people under stress are more prone to develop:
- Infections: Immunity is reduced. Disease produced organisms like bacteria, virus, fungi take the upper hand and cause infections. Repeated sore throats, skin-boils, upper respiratory tract infections. Repeated sore throats, skin-boils, upper respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, typhoid, tuberculosis, urinary tract infections, diarrhea, and dysentery are common.
- Acid-peptic disorders and peptic ulcers
